DESCRIPTION:The DIW Europe Lecture is a lecture series by leading policy-ma
 kers and academics on the future of Europe. The series aims at fostering a
 nd informing the debate on key European policy issues\, and at bringing th
 is debate to the heart of Germany's policy-making in Berlin. Previous Euro
 pe Lectures have been held by Mario Draghi\, Barry Eichengreen and Lawrenc
 e H. Summers.\n\nFollowing an outstanding private sector career in which s
 he had served as the first Chairwoman of the international law firm Baker 
 & McKenzie\, Christine Lagarde joined the French Government in June 2005 a
 s Trade Minister. After a brief stint as Minister for Agriculture and Fish
 eries\, in June 2007 she became the first woman to hold the post of Financ
 e and Economy Minister of a G-7 country. As Chair of the G-20 when France 
 took over its presidency for the year 2011\, she set in motion a wide-rang
 ing work agenda on the reform of the international monetary system. On Jul
 y 5\, 2011\, Christine Lagarde became the eleventh Managing Director of th
 e IMF\, the first woman in that position. In 2016\, the IMF Executive Boar
 d selected her to serve for a second five-year term.
